I am an oculofacial plastic surgeon who left full-time academia to open a boutique private practice. Approximately 98% of my practice is non-insurance based (I only accept Medicare because it's the right thing to do, but I choose not to deal with commercial insurance plans that bully small medical offices). Over the past 4 years, I have grown this practice into a successful business with only myself and no actual full time employees. As a professor at the University of Washington, I started this venture as a way to show myself and my students (medical students, residents, fellows) that it is still possible to practice ethical, high-quality medicine without succumbing to the bullying of commercial insurances and large HMOs / institutionalized medicine. So many physicians are suffering from burnout and increasing suicide rates because we are unhappy with administrative burdens, cost-cutting regulations, uncompensated time/care, etc... that plague current medicine - we all seek to return to a model where we can spend time caring for patients and practicing medicine the way it was meant to be. My practice is my *increasingly successful* way to do this.
