Hi, I'm Monae Everett, I opened Monae Artistry in 2005 as an LLC for my hair and makeup business. In 2018 I added the Monae Life Academy to educate beauty professionals on the importance of celebrating and styling all hair textures. In 2021 I launched the Texture Style Awards, the first beauty based awards created to celebrate all hair textures.
I've earned the title of celebrity hairstylist and I've worked in the beauty industry for 20 years. I created the Monae Life Academy because of the lack of representation of black and brown faces as well as and Kinky and Curly hair types in media. Displayed with every Oscars so white # or model showing her less than professional treatment backstage.
I am even more disappointed in the lack of black and brown talent behind the scenes. If our features are not seen as beautiful then why would major productions seek to display our beauty and hire the professionals who can make us look our best? Quite often I am the only black key artist or lead in any capacity on set. This is regardless of whether the talent (actor, model, politician) is a person of color or not.
Many black and brown artists also are faced with the barriers of entry into this tight knit industry. I created the Monaè life Academy to teach how to style all hair textures to photographic perfection, give access to crush these glass ceilings, and teach the etiquette needed for you to be rehired and soar to the top of the industry.
I am uniquely qualified to teach these courses because there are very few artists who have worked with the variety or entertainers I've styled. There are even less artists who are able to style ALL textures of hair and work with talent from all cultures. Unfortunately, too many productions and stylists seemingly only value talent that look a particular way. In 2021 this is no longer acceptable.
I recently went against all odds and created the Texture Style Awards. This is the first award show that celebrates all hair textures, all standards of beauty, and hairstylists of all ethnicities.
As the sole employee in my company, this meant I had to hire a graphic designer, a photographers, videographers, models, new website designer, create sponsorship requests, and enter a whole portion of the beauty industry.
All of the major hair industry award shows are backed hundreds on thousands of dollars from sponsors and they are known to only celebrate Caucasian artists and Caucasian standards of beauty.
I have now created the opportunity for black and brown artists to display their skill, and be judged at the same scale, plus get the opportunities and recognition they deserve.
