Eyedea Medical (EM) is a woman owned, medtech social enterprise working to alleviate the burden of corneal blindness globally through development of novel medical devices to improve outcomes and access to vision-restoring corneal procedures. EM's first products seek to de-skill, standardize, and improve the efficiency of separating layers of the cornea for the use in corneal transplants. Through over 500 interviews with corneal stakeholders, EM found that separation of a specific layer in the cornea will help increase the adoption of two revolutionary corneal transplants, DMEK and DALK and ultimately help reverse blindness in tens of millions of individuals. EM will begin sales of the first product, DescePrep, by Q4 2021 and plans to raise funding for the R&D of the follow-on product, DesceCleave, by the end of 2021.
EM is working to increase adoption and access to corneal transplants regardless of the patient's circumstance with innovative technologies and business models to bring solutions to the places where inequities within healthcare are the greatest. We are building sustainable innovations that deskill procedures, reduce costs, and improve the capacity and efficacy of eye banks and operating rooms around the world.
