I founded Commit to Green, a New York State corporation in 2016. From the beginning, Commit to Green's focus has been to produce high-quality, educational compostable packaging products to fuel our transition to a zero-waste future. Five years after founding, our success is reflected in our expansive set of compostable products—from produce bags to trash liners and reusable shopping bags—that meet or exceed the highest technical and sustainability standards. It's also reflected in the strong B2B partnerships we've forged across the country, and in our consistent $100K+ in annual sales.
But my time spent in the compostable packaging industry and my meetings with stakeholders have also taught me to recognize the recurring hurdles that keep people from recycling their organics: A lack of an easy-to-navigate system to divert organic waste; a lack of clarity around the tangible environmental benefits of recycling organics, which in turn results in a lack of motivation for people to keep participating; and a lack of transparency as to what happens to that organic waste once it's diverted, i.e. Where it goes after haulers pick it up and beyond. In 2020, my in-depth knowledge of the recycling space propelled me to pioneer a solution that could bridge the gap between these issues. The result was the Loshi System, which succeeds in doing exactly that.
Loshi System is a new service offered by Commit to Green. It is a B2B and B2C SaaS platform that provides a suite of smart solutions that help people navigate the organics recycling and diversion framework. Composting can seem complex and opaque for the average person, but Loshi's integrated hardware-software system makes the whole process easy to understand, navigate, and connect with. This is how it works: our proprietary sensor captures the weight and volume of waste in an individual compost bin and relays that information to the Loshi mobile web app, where it is displayed on the dashboard as clear, relatable insights that measure a user's environmental impact. Because the benefits of organics recycling can be abstract and hard to quantify, a key part of our mission is to help Loshi users understand the tangible energy effects of their participation—e.g. "You composted 50 lbs of food waste this week. That's the same as running 97 laptops for 10 hours." Loshi also represents an unprecedented opportunity to use data for good. We believe that by aggregating data from individual users—both households and businesses—Loshi System has the potential to disrupt the way we recycle organic waste by making it smarter and more efficient on a citywide scale.
